The club enjoyed another excellent, active year. Once more the Book Fair, guided by Rob Jones, was a major and continuing activity culminating in a profit of some $50,000 and a high sense of fellowship and achievement.

Such funding success enabled a start on a second shelter for families at Claudelands Playground, assisted by grants from WEL Energy Trust and Sky City, Hamilton. Other significant club funding was also granted to Rotary Foundation, Assistance Dogs, St John equipment, Zeal teenager support and again to Taveuni in Fiji where Doug Haigh, Lynden Clements and Graham Garden built an extension to an existing school classroom.

Graeme Kitto’s presenting of Environmental Awards to local schools gained deserved newspaper publicity, greatly enhancing the club’s image; while Mike Cahill’s successful organising of club and community support to provide housing and furniture for Afghan interpreter refugees also received very favourable media comment.

Youth activities included sponsoring four senior students to Science Summer Schools and the supporting of a Waikato Diocesan initiative to upgrade Autism NZ premises.

The team of Rotary Readers again reported a successful year guiding their Fairfield Primary School pupils. The Children’s Christmas party and the Dictionary Presentation to primary school leavers run by our club were received with enthusiasm.

Deniss Yeung’s success with guest speakers further enlivened our club’s programme and image.

At our Changeover Night, Seddon Polglase was honoured as a Paul Harris Fellow; Colin Sheppard, Rob Jones and Stewart France were presented with Sapphire Pins, while Nelson Cullen received a Multiple Sapphire Award.
