The year began with two clear objectives; an increase in membership and a sounder financial base. These were both satisfactorily achieved.
The Book Fair Action Group under Director Rob Jones, with co-ordination by Ross Williams, managed so creatively by President Allan and involving the whole Club, achieved remarkable fundraising success.
Our project to mark Rotary’s Centennial year was the development of a playground at Claudelands Park. The sale of engraved pavers assisted with finances. Doug Haigh successfully co-ordinated the project which culminated in a family day to marks the park's opening.
Youth projects included RYLA, Science Summer School, inter-school debate, and support for Frankton Rotaract. An International Night was held at The Waikato Indian Community Centre with the Indian High Commissioner as our guest speaker.
Trial flights for members and seeing micrlight construction were highlights of a vocational visit to Max Clear's business at Te Kowhia.
An Australian make-up was held at Queensland’s Mooloolaba and Maroochydore clubs
Thanks to Nelson Cullen, Club publicity was given marked emphasis, and Elgar Henry’s Graffiti Cats continued their valuable work. Michael Timmins’ Rotary Readers were again active at Fairfield Primary School and the Christmas Party for Fairfield’s junior pupils was a joyful occasion.
The Club Christmas function was a memorable barbecue at Waikato Diocesan School.
Honorary Membership was conferred upon Jean Vickridge, while Geoff Martin and Hamilton Gardens’ Director, Peter Sergel were honoured as Paul Harris Fellows. Nelson Cullen received a Sapphire Paul Harris Award from District 9930.
